Duhok city, hosting the final of the Iraqi basketball league for the third year in a row, triumphed to their fourth consecutive title. The final match was held on May 28th at the Sports Education College Hall in Duhok city, in front of many excited fans from both sets of teams. In a remake of last year's duel, Duhok faced its regular challenger, Karkh, from Baghdad in the final.
Duhok mustered a fantastic performance, winning the final contest 80-71. Duhok controlled the game from the outset and kept up the pressure right up to the last minute.
For identifying the league champions, the Iraqi Basketball Association (IBA) put a new system in place. According to the proposed system, the two teams that reach the final had to play a round of three matches with each other. Duhok faced Karkh thrice, winning the first match 88-78 before losing the second one 75-78. The third match ended in Duhok's favor, earning the team the league champions title.
Duhok's basketball team was founded in 1972 and was accepted in the Iraqi league as a fourth-grade team. In the 1980s, the team was promoted to the second grade before moving up to the first grade in the early 1990s. The team joined the Iraqi premier league in 2001 and secured fourth place.
Duhok reputation and strength grew in 2009 when it won the Iraqi basketball premier league title for the first time in its history. Duhok repeated their feat of 2009 by becoming Iraqi champions in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
