Omed Sabah, spokesperson of the Kurdistan Region's Presidency Office said that Kurdish President Massoud Barzani will be visiting Russia in November, soon after Eid al-Adha.
Sabah said President Barzani has received an official invitation from the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, to visit Moscow. He rejected claims that Barzani's visit is linked to the recent meeting between Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Maliki and President Putin in Moscow.
"We will announce the purpose of the visit during the visit itself," Sabah said in an interview with a local Kurdish news website. "Russia is an important country for Kurdistan Region and Iraq, both politically and diplomatically," he added.
The visit will be the first by a top Kurdish official to Russia in recent memory. Diplomatic aides for the Kurdish President said that energy sources in Kurdistan Region will be high on the agenda when talks begin between Kurdish and Russian delegations in Moscow. Gasprom, Russia's giant oil company, has already shown interest in Kurdish natural resources.
